Run out of tank water? Here's what to do
Turning on the tap and getting nothing is no fun. Here's what to check, how to get water, and how to avoid it next time.
1. Check it really is empty
Before you order, take a look in the tank or check its level. If there's still water in it, the problem could be the pump, a tripped switch or a blocked filter rather than an empty tank. A plumber or pump specialist can help with those.
2. Turn off your pump
If the tank is empty, switch the pump off at the wall so it doesn't run dry and get damaged while you wait.
3. Book a load
Book online at matakanawater.co.nz/book. When you book, tick "I've run out of water" and tell us anything we should know. Jasmine sees it straight away, and we'll fit you in sooner if we can. We can't promise an earlier time, but we'll do our best. If you need water today, call us on 021 223 3604.
4. Get ready for the truck
- Make sure the driveway is clear of cars and the gate is open.
- Tie up or bring in any dogs.
- Make sure the tank is easy to reach and the lid can be opened.
You don't need to be home. Your driver texts when they set off.
5. After the delivery
- Turn your pump back on. If it was run dry, it may need to be primed before it works properly.
- The water can look a little cloudy at first while any sediment in the tank settles. Give it a few hours.
Need drinking water in the meantime?
Our community tap at 11 Duck Creek Road is open 24/7 and it's self-service. Bring your own bottles or containers and fill up with the same aquifer water we deliver.
Stop it happening again
- Book your top-up when the tank is around a third full.
- Use our water usage calculator to work out how long a load lasts in your home.
- Try Matakana TankWatch: a HiLo 4G monitor shows your tank level on your phone and texts you when it's getting low. Share it with us and we'll book your top-up when you reach your level.
